Hazardous Substances Information System Update

Worksafe-VictoriaThe Hazardous Substances Information System Online Database formulated by Safe Work Australia is soon to be updated.

The update will occur in accordance with a new set of safety directives coming out of the European Union, the international leader in research and classification of hazardous substances encountered in the work environment.

The Hazardous Substances Information System (HSIS) online database is an internet resource that allows users to find information on substances that have been classified in accordance with the Approved Criteria for Classifying hazardous substances regulations and guidelines.

The update is comprised of a total of 456 entries of which there are 92 amendments to existing entries, 360 new entries and 4 deletions.

Safe Work Australia urges Australian businesses to make use of this resource, and take note of changes that are expected to be finalised by November2010.

The HSIS database is a vital tool for ensuring safety in the workplace – particularly in sectors that use a wide-variety of chemicals in their work environment or expose workers to potentially hazardous substances.

Employers need to be well informed of nature of chemicals and other substances that are encountered in the workplace.
