Domestic Violence Soon To Become Workplace Issue

counselling-workplaceDomestic violence may soon be recognised as a workplace issue, following a proposal being put forward by the Community and Public Sectors Union.

The proposal, put in collaboration with the University of New South Wales, would focus on supporting victims of domestic of abuse to stay at work.

The proposal would involve employers and employees working together to determine flexible and supporting working provisions for victims.

Minister for the Status of Women Tanya Plibersek said that issues related to violence against women cost Australia $13.6 billion each year.

This figure is expected to increase by two billion dollars in a decade if the problem of domestic violence is not addressed.

“The impact of domestic violence on their employment has clear adverse consequences or their economic security and independence.”

“By remaining connected to the workplace – a woman has a much better chance of retaining her independence after a perpetrator has been removed from the family home,” Ms Plibersek said.
